Glen Turner Double Cask Rum Cask Finish

I had low expectations for this whisky and it truly surprised me, especially the nose, which is nearly perfect. For a less-known distillery, it's well-made, and the rum casks impart pleasant aromas and flavors. There might be a bit too much oakiness at times, but it's a good dram, even better for only $20. Bottled at 40% ABV with a tawny color. The nose is amazing. Immediate tobacco and molasses upon opening. Grassy, lots of barley. Chalky malted barley. Dry brown grass. Dried fruits appear briefly. It smells like young rum. Dust. Milk powder. Sawdust. Freshly cut wood. Molasses. Quite nice. Sugary dried fruits. Marmalade, actually excellent. Dry cake. The palate is fresh and easy to drink. Fruity. Apples and pears; mild pepper. Apple juice. No alcohol detected, very smooth. A bit simple. The aftertaste is dominated by sawdust. Raw rice. Exactly like licking a plain wooden table. Woody overall. I may have overestimated the balance and nose, but this is a solid 82 out of 100. It could benefit from a higher ABV to develop a more complex palate, but it's a good offering for the price.
