Glen Marnoch Bourbon Cask Finish (Aldi)

Nose: Smells buttery and like cereal, with vanilla, some fruitiness (perhaps apple?), and a bit of oak. [The empty glass retains very little aroma]. Palate: It begins light and moderately sweet, then develops a slight gingery spice and vanilla. There are some malty notes, but not much else. The mouthfeel is light but acceptable. Finish: Brief. A sweet and moderately spicy aftertaste. Despite efforts, the Glen Marnoch distillery remains elusive; it's a name Aldi uses for its mid-tier single malt line. This bottle was part of a three-miniature Glen Marnoch sampler pack, and reviews of the other two expressions will follow shortly. This spirit likely contains whiskies from an unrevealed Highland distillery (or distilleries) suitable for blending, meeting minimum age requirements. It possesses a certain "Highland" character but lacks depth. To its credit, there are no major flaws to point out, aside from being very understated in every aspect. The aroma is straightforward but, all things considered, it is clean and genuine. The taste is similarly uncomplicated, relying on an interaction between sweet and spicy grain characteristics. An incredibly drinkable bottle from Aldi. Packed with flavor and incredibly smooth. Superior to some Speyside single malts. Lacks complexity but is perfectly enjoyable.
