Remus Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Smells of sweet vanilla. A burst of corn syrup sweetness, followed by astringent dry oak. Citrus peel bitters and tannins. Thin mouthfeel, and light straw color. Rye pepper and spice emerge, then dry tannic vanilla oak in a long finish, becoming slightly acrid at the very end. Second tasting. Neat is similar, perhaps a honeysuckle sweetness buried within. With ice, the tannic finish softens slightly, allowing the honeysuckle, rye spice, and bitter citrus to come through, but not enough. The finish turns more sour. As the ice melts, lowering the ABV, it becomes an easy drink. I suspect this will work well in cocktails – my next test. A bit underwhelmed. I'm familiar with MGP bourbons and appreciate them in other brands, so I expected more from their own label. I enjoyed their Remus Repeal Reserve Series V, but this... not so much. Will keep considering this.

This is the first tasting from a new bottle. The aroma offers notes of maraschino cherries, apple, and a hint of Werther's Original. The flavor is rather average. Moderately sweet vanilla, with a slight presence of barrel char throughout. It's on the lighter side, but the alcohol content prevents it from tasting dull. The finish is shorter, with oakiness becoming more prominent. My initial impression is that it's very enjoyable overall, and a solid, though not exceptional, bottle in the sub-$30 range. I'm eager for another glass.

Overall, it's not the most captivating pour; I'm curious to try Remus Repel, as I've heard positive feedback about it.

Smells of toasted marshmallow, honey, vanilla, and caramel. Tastes like light toasted caramel with hints of green apple and citrus. The finish is the best part; the citrus and sweet bourbon make an Old Fashioned-like aftertaste. Excellent! I'll definitely try this again.

The palate is full-bodied and nearly bitter, with flavors of allspice, cloves, and cinnamon. The finish endures, and as the spice subsides, a touch of mint emerges, though it's primarily reminiscent of candied sugars.

Finally tried the famous Remus. Smells of char and light smoke, with the white oak really coming through. Scents of caramel dominate, matched with sweet vanilla and baking spices, typical of bourbon. The taste is smooth but lacks complexity. A slight lingering heat with caramel. Good.
