Foursquare Spiced Rum

N: Sweet with a tart fruitiness, reminiscent of a cherry and blue raspberry Icee. Further sniffing reveals spices, not typical cinnamon, but more like coriander and clove with some lemon and another unusual note. Very odd. P: Light, surprisingly dry, and very spiced. The nose's clove and coriander notes return, with cardamom, perhaps ginger, and other spices leaning bitter and herbal. White pepper, lemon, and mint are also present. It's remarkably similar to Fernet Branca mixed into lightly aged rum. Quite strange. A bit more watery than desired, but otherwise, it's shaping up to be a decent liqueur. F: Dry with those same herbal spices and a mild drying, tingling sensation. Conclusion: Not the sweet, syrupy, cinnamony mix I anticipated. It's like comparing Cuervo Silver to a quality blanco like Partida and realizing the category is different than imagined. Intriguing, I can sip about half a glass before tiring of it, but its use is unclear. Sipping neat, I'd rate it between a 9 and 12, perhaps an 11. I appreciate the funkiness and want to rate it higher, but it's more interesting than tasty, lacking the fullness I seek, especially in a mixer. A higher proof would certainly improve it. I might lower it to a 10 later. Actually, it's a 10 now. Still contemplating mixers. It might substitute for a light reposado tequila. In rum cocktails, it's hard to imagine choosing this over Plantation 3 Stars or Plantation Xaymaca. Thanks to a friend for sharing.

Nose: nutmeg, eggnog, vanilla, cinnamon butter, molasses, toasted almond, treacle, butterscotch, frosted wheat, honey, clove, anise, candied citrus, slight ethanol burn. Palate: nutmeg, cinnamon, honey, toasted almond, toffee, floral tea, molasses, vanilla, ginger, dried red fruit, coffee, oat, clove, mild alcohol bite, with a medium-length finish featuring baking spice, honey, and toffee. This is undoubtedly the finest spiced rum I've sampled. In fact, it's the only one I could envision drinking straight without disappointment. This doesn't mean it's extraordinary, but rather that it's not actively unpleasant. The nose is quite appealing for a spiced rum. Strong baking spices emerge from the glass, evoking a boozy homemade eggnog. There's sweet molasses, honey, and an oaty, grainy note that reminds me of Frosted Wheat cereal or buttered toast with cinnamon. The palate isn't quite as good as the nose; it certainly tastes young and diluted. Nevertheless, the baking spices are prominent, complemented by pleasant notes of toasted almond, toffee, and tea. It's not a masterpiece, but it is quite enjoyable. Overall, if you need a spiced rum for your collection, I believe this is the one to get, though I'm certainly open to other recommendations. I know from experience that it mixes well with Coke, and I'm sure it's very versatile otherwise. The best part is the price: at $14 near me, it's the cheapest of all the spiced rums I've reviewed. Foursquare remains my favorite rum producer by far, and they have another winner with this product.

Not bad. Notes of apple, vanilla, and nutmeg. It's dry, herbal, and dusty. Look, if you're adventurous and enjoy rum, as I do, you'll try anything. I haven't yet encountered a rum I didn't like. I simply enjoy some more than others. This one is affordable, so consider purchasing a bottle.
