Taste - Spicier notes than the 2023 edition, then it mellows into rich berries coated in nougat. It's a journey of oak, chewy bullseye candies, and baking spices. This all subsides into a cigar box-like maturity that signals the older, oakier bourbons are confidently present. Finish - Long, coating, syrupy, yet leathery like your favorite armchair. Nicely crafted! Overall - One of the best 4 Roses LEs I've tasted. Brent Elliott just keeps improving. This rivals his 2019 standout, and gently refines his 2023 blend. For me, this is the bourbon I find hard to set down.

About this bottle
The seventeenth edition of Four Roses Limited Edition Small Batch Bourbon showcases four distinct bourbon recipes, aged between 12 and 20 years. The selected recipes include a 12-year-old OBSV (35% rye, delicate fruit yeast), a 15-year-old OESK (20% rye, slight spice yeast), a 16-year-old OESF (20% rye, herbal notes yeast), and a 20-year-old OBSV (35% rye, delicate fruit yeast). Master Distiller Brett Elliott crafted this bourbon, which is bottled at 108.2 proof without chill-filtration. Around 16,680 hand-numbered bottles will be offered at the brand's Kentucky visitor centers starting September 14, 2024, and at select retailers nationwide later that month. The suggested retail price is $220.

This bourbon presented with a POWERFUL nose and a substantial mouthfeel. However, the medium finish was disappointing, being too brief for my preference. I favor the 135th over this expression. Nose - It evokes autumn for me, with notes of clove, cinnamon, allspice, and vanilla. The aroma alone is amazing, earning a perfect score. It's truly the highlight. Palate - The texture is thick and viscous, coating the tongue. The flavors detected on the nose weren't strongly present on the palate, which was a letdown given the impressive aroma. I detected some cinnamon and oak, along with honey. Finish - This is where it fell short for me. Despite the thick mouthfeel, the finish was merely medium length – far too short. This significantly reduced my overall rating from a perfect score to a 4.
Bourbon has never quite matched Scotch in my opinion, so I decided to invest in this expensive Four Roses hoping to change that. The nose is abundant with sweet grains, toasted nuts, and sour cherries before transforming into polished wood, allspice, and fennel. Nice herbal complexity. Intense waves of flavors strike the palate, reminiscent of toffee, honey, and rich oak spices. This was expertly blended. Thyme, marzipan, and a hint of amaretto fade in the prolonged and sophisticated aftertaste. It doesn't quite reach 90 points, but I'm far from dissatisfied. Toasted aroma with notes of vanilla, some subtle caramel, malty with rich complexity, hints of caramel and vanilla, a touch of spice, and a very pleasing finish.
