FEW American Straight Whiskey

Sampled straight from a grappa copita after a few minutes to breathe. This is a "sample" from a direct-to-consumer subscription box that was a gift. The aroma hits you right away. I detected notes of cedar and mothballs, the skin of a green apple, and grape jelly. A lot is happening, and it's enjoyable. It feels acceptably rich in the mouth, but not as much as the aroma suggested after swirling. On the palate, it's young and spicy. Cedar, menthol, and wood tannin show up first. The taste is drying and concludes with a little tartness, reminiscent of bitter lemon peel. A sweet note sits above everything, keeping it cohesive. This is a captivating whiskey, but similar to Lot 40, I believe it will divide opinion. I enjoy it and would certainly drink more, though I don't think it's quite good enough for my regular collection.

I purchased this bottle expecting to dislike it. As it turns out, while I don't love it, I do like it a lot. It has chocolate, spicy rye, smoke, coffee, and vanilla, all contributing positively. Considering the price, it's worth picking up a bottle. I enjoy all spirits neat, and you should too.

Aroma - strong cereal, some tart fruits, sourdough bread. Palate - toasted whole grain bread, slight green wood notes, a bit of sour tannins, light texture. Finish - dry on the tongue, toasted grains persist, moderate burn.

Maple on the nose, with an oily, very pleasant mouthfeel. Not much flavor on the back end with significant heat. Once the heat fades, cherry notes linger briefly. An enjoyable experience. Gratitude to a friend.

Sweet corn, hickory wood, charred cherry, brown sugar, ginger cookies, sugar cookies, caramel corn and apples, molasses, sweet spice, honey graham crackers, a hint of pencil.

Clove and baking spice on the aroma. Similar taste, slightly sharp overall, but I can see why someone might enjoy the flavors. Ultimately not for me.
