About this bottle

Elijah Craig is expanding its barrel proof and rye selections with the first release of a Kentucky straight rye whiskey offered at barrel proof. Similar to the Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Bourbon releases, the Barrel Proof Rye will be issued three times annually: in January, May, and September. As this is the initial 2025 release, it is designated Barrel Proof Batch A925. It has been aged for 12 years and 3 months and is bottled at 108 proof. Availability commences in late September 2025. (SRP $74.99)

A new release from EC. Quite enthusiastic about the age statement. Less thrilled about a 108 proof whiskey labeled as “barrel proof,” but let's proceed with the review… The aroma presents intriguing notes of nougat, burnt caramel, cinnamon sugar, rye crackers, bubblegum, orange peel, and mint. Hardly any botanical or herbal scents. It smells much more like a high-rye bourbon. Virtually no ethanol presence. The taste aligns well with the aroma but also includes blackberry notes along with spicy oak, white pepper, clove, rock candy, and barrel char. A prominent tart cherry flavor also stands out and deserves special mention. The flavors are bold and harmoniously combined. The finish delivers leather, tea leaf, stewed peaches, rye spice, licorice, spearmint, and some pleasant, mellow oak. The spice and oak notes have a significant lingering presence. The mouthfeel has adequate viscosity but finishes quite dry. An intriguing and distinctive rye that I may not have adequately praised in the description above. Ultimately, this is a complex, multi-layered offering that comes together exceptionally well. If a combination of fruit and spice is your preference, don't overlook this one. At $67.99 and boasting a 12-year age statement, it would be foolish not to consider it a great value. It’s a winner, and I will certainly be purchasing future releases, hoping for a higher proof banger.

Nose - Black licorice and anise are prominent. An herbal scent reminiscent of Earl Grey tea is also present. It's a lively aroma that really stands out from the glass. Palate - Green apple appears next, joined by baking spices such as nutmeg and clove. Black pepper follows, which might be a bit overpowering for some. The texture is warm, buttery, with a sweet orange flavor. It's a very calming drink. This is a fantastic, more spiced pour, which is ideal at its 108 proof. Finish - Warm and pleasant. It concludes with candied orange and caraway seed. A fun, farm-like note that encourages another taste. Overall - Elevates the 92 proof rye to superior levels. A great, straightforward addition! I'm eager to see how this offering, released three times annually, evolves. Some might find the spicy pepper and nutmeg notes a bit intense. I ENJOY IT 92/100

Eucalyptus and candied black licorice smell. Eucalyptus, mint, candied nuts, salty, maple, brewed tea. Vanilla finish. Spicier and less sweet than the bourbon releases.

Breanne Jameson 4.3

This rye is wonderfully balanced and smooth to drink, not too harsh, just the right alcohol content. It feels full and savory from the first taste to the end.
