About this bottle

Produced at the renowned La Alteña Distillery in Los Altos, Jalisco, founded by Don Felipe Camarena in 1937, with his grandson Carlos Camarena now serving as master distiller. El Tesoro exclusively uses 100% estate-grown agave, which is crushed by a tractor-pulled tahona after cooking. The reposado is aged for 9-11 months in former bourbon casks. Note: packaging was updated in April 2018. (SRP $65)

Trevon Gill 3.3

Rating: 15/23. I had the blanco version previously and found its profile too subtle and mild, but heard good things about this brand and hoped for improvement. The aroma is weak, mostly faint musty cardboard with a hint of brine. The palate, however, is more substantial than expected. It's not intensely flavored but works well, starting with musty cardboard and mild wood, then developing notes of pepper, minerals, slightly sweet brine, a touch of cinnamon, faint mint, and a mild, vaguely fruity essence like underripe apples and lime. At times, rich, sweet, somewhat savory stewed agave emerges, but never dominates. The finish is slightly drying, with brine, minerals, mint, lime, and sweet, savory stewed agave. Overall, the balance and complexity are good, though I'd prefer more intensity. It's refined but less full-bodied than Partida Blanco. Compared side-by-side, they are closer than anticipated. It falls short of Tapatio Blanco, which has more character even in its mildness, though this isn't far behind. Próspero Blanco is also close. I'm settling on a rating of 15. Thanks for the sample.

Kenny Houck 4.0

This is my preferred reposado tequila for spirit-forward cocktails. Unlike many other reposados I've sampled, this one has less noticeable oak and sweetness, emphasizing the agave more. The aroma is somewhat light, offering agave and a mineral scent. The palate is its strong suit, with hints of smoke, lime, spice, and a touch of sweetness. The finish is quite long, without heat, and slightly briny. It's a reliable choice, though a bit pricey, which limits its use in heavily mixed drinks. Drank neat, it's one of the superior reposado tequilas. I might still prefer the blanco, but it's a close call, and either would be a good choice, as would the anejo.

Elvin Bradshaw 4.8

El Tesoro Reposado mirrors its blanco sibling, presenting bold notes of citrus, agave, and spice. La Altena crafts exceptional tahona-style tequila using traditional methods and high-altitude agave. Its appearance is a honey-gold hue with a creamy texture. The aroma offers hints of citrus, cooked agave, almonds, vanilla, and subtle oak. The taste echoes the nose with cooked agave, orange zest, black pepper, clove, and oak. The finish is brief but leaves a spicy sensation on the palate, with lingering agave and honey sensations in the throat.

Molly Blevins 4.8

Drank neat. The nose is delicate and balanced, with notes of roasted agave, oak sawdust, and green herbs. The taste is agave-sweet with exotic fruits, oak and cedar, a hint of vanilla, some grassy tarragon, mint, pepper, and minerals. The finish is medium with a more natural sweetness than most, perfectly balanced with bitter and sweet notes. The mouthfeel is honestly in the middle. Overall, this is a natural and well-crafted tequila. No overpowering artificial flavors, and many flavors to discover and enjoy. This is meant for sipping. Mixing or shooting would be a waste. Sip and savor. This might be my favorite tequila line.

Grace Mcgrath 3.5

Nose: Sweet cooked agave, lime, black pepper, earthy vegetal notes, mild caramel, moderate minerality, nutmeg, clove, light barrel char, cocoa, slight ethanol burn. Taste: Sweet cooked agave, lime, tropical fruit, black pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, vanilla bean, butterscotch, grassy earthiness, mineral notes, mild cocoa-like char, slight alcohol bite. The finish is brief, with fading pepper, citrus, and chocolate notes alongside the agave. Quite good, but not exceptional. It's enjoyable on its own and makes a superb margarita.

Despite extensive experience with whiskey, rum, and brandy, this marks my first tequila. It pours nearly colorless with a faint beige tint. The nose carries scents of salt, alcohol, and black pepper. The palate features cooked agave, smoke, some sweetness, and subtle notes of green pepper and mint. It has a medium body and a clean, medium finish. I'm eager to explore more of this category. Additionally, the stopper resembles a small tahona and has a notable weight; handle it carefully.
