About this bottle

El Tequileño Reposado Gran Reserva, like the brand's standard Reposado, is made with 100% blue weber agave from Los Altos, Jalisco, and uses mineral-rich spring water from El Volcan de Tequila. It is aged for 8 months in American oak and then blended with a small quantity of their añejo reserve. No additives are included. Suggested retail price is $55-60.

Neat. Moderate intensity on the nose, delightful with caramel, butterscotch, oak, agave, some light pear, and hints of baking spice, vanilla, and green herbs. The taste begins with agave, honey, pear, oak, and vanilla. It then develops with some barrel char, pepper, anise, slight spearmint, and green herbs. The finish is dry and not particularly sweet, with some slight oak tannins, vanilla, and anise. Overall, it's very good. Smooth with well-balanced and pretty flavors. There's some complexity here, but it can be easily overlooked as the flavors can be mild. It's additive-free, and the natural flavors support this, which is appreciated. Best enjoyed neat, sipped slowly in a quiet room. Using it as a mixer would be a waste as the flavors would be overwhelmed. Value is tricky. I have a few favorite repos that are 1/3 less expensive, but then I see that bottle of Clase Azul for double this price, and it is far inferior to this bottle, while offering a similar flavor profile (without the obvious additives).

This review is for the standard reposado; however, the tasting notes and score apply to both. The barcode incorrectly brings up the Grand Reserva version. The Grand Reserva is excellent, but the standard reposado at half the price offers incredible value. It's enjoyable enough to drink on its own, yet affordable enough to use generously in margaritas and palomas. This is premium quality at a budget price, outperforming additive-laden products like Clase Azul, Casamigos, or Don Julio 1942 in aroma and taste, despite its simple packaging.
