About this bottle

El Jimador Reposado Tequila, named for the skilled agave harvesters, is an accessible brand from Casa Herradura. The process begins with roasting piñas in a clay oven, followed by double distillation. The resulting spirit then rests for two months in American oak bourbon barrels.

Revision: I am unsure why I wrote such a positive initial review. It's a citrus and caramel delight that surpasses most Blanco tequilas. There's definitely menthol, and while the flavor profile is limited, this tequila leaves a significant impression, and I want more. It's sweet and briefly reminiscent of tang and grape soda, but it's enjoyable and tasty. I appreciate this reposado, despite its unconventional characteristics. The agave flavor is not prominent, nor is the wood influence. While other añejos offer a more earthy profile, this reposado is fun. The absence of smoky meatiness and vegetal notes is noted, but it remains enjoyable! Compared to Don Julio 1952, this offering is milder and rich in mineral notes. However, it is also sweet and fun. It might lack refinement, but this is a tequila worth exploring. A touch of anise adds richness without detracting from the overall taste. This is a well-balanced spirit. The initial flavors are subtle caramel and citrus combined with alcohol. The alcohol is quite potent, eventually manifesting as mineral notes. The finish is pleasantly sweet, but the alcohol and minerals overshadow the delicate positive flavors. It lacks significant depth. Initially, I favored this over the Blanco, but now I prefer the Blanco. The aroma possesses a lightness, along with fruity sweetness and spice. The palate offers a pleasant tingle of spice and some light, but not cloying, sweet caramel. Notes of tropical fruits like mango and papaya emerge. It's sweet and smooth, yet light and not overly complex. There's a subtle barrel presence and some vanilla. This would be excellent in a margarita. While not the absolute best, it's smooth with abundant tequila character and a pleasing fruity sweetness. It's good. The Blanco is a bit bolder with more vanilla sweetness. The Blanco is also good, but this expression is richer and fuller. It's an improvement, though not an exceptional sipper. It's more subtle than Hornitos Reposado, but it lacks punch and is too light. It's slightly superior to Hornitos Reposado, but still ranks low. Honestly, I'm undecided between them. This one has more engaging complexity throughout, but it loses richness when diluted. Neither compares to Herradura Reposado.

Rating: 10/23 Nose: This immediately brings Cuervo Gold to mind, with a cedar presence, confectioner's sugar, and a hint of citrus. There's a bit more subtle herbal presence with a natural tequila scent, but the primary impression is Cuervo Gold. Not a great start. Palate: The palate is much improved over Cuervo Gold. It's fuller and smoother with a more authentic light caramel sweetness that may or may not be real agave but is certainly less like confectioner's sugar. There's something surprisingly bitter and meaty, similar to Corralejo Reposado, yet the flavor remains fairly light. I detect a light dusting of mint. It resembles tequila, but isn't entirely convincing due to the Cuervo Gold profile as well. It has moderate complexity, but the balance is quite off. The añejo is fuller and substantially more balanced. An occasional tomato note appears but disappears quickly. Finish: I get confectioner's sugar, but also some cedar, hints of agave, and so on. Like with Cuervo Gold, this is the weakest aspect of this tequila, though not as weak as with Cuervo Gold. This is not a good tequila. The fact that I've been comparing it to Cuervo Gold should come as no surprise. It is significantly worse than the añejo while costing only slightly less, so I would never recommend purchasing it. It is substantially smoother with less alcohol and a better, fuller profile than Cuervo, so it is undoubtedly a far superior tequila. Still, it tastes somewhat off. An 11 would likely be too generous, but an 8 would be too harsh. I believe a 10 is appropriate.

What's your go-to vacation drink? I've been enjoying some time off from the daily grind, and while I can't hit the beach, I'll soak up the sun, close my eyes, and have some tequila. I hadn't seen this bottle of El Jimador Reposado in a while, as I usually keep taller bottles towards the back of my bar for looks. The harvesters (Jimadores) use a sharp tool (coa) to hand-cut each agave heart (piña). These hearts are then roasted in a clay oven before fermentation and double distillation. The spirit ages for two months in oak bourbon barrels before bottling. The aroma of El Jimador Reposado presents agave, a bit of tart lime, and a savory quality akin to fresh butter. Later, I can detect subtle floral notes like lilac, cedar, and more fresh citrus. This tequila is mild. It starts with a brief vanilla sweetness that shifts. You still notice the familiar build-up to a bite that often causes wincing, but it feels more like a gentle bump than a sharp drop. I can taste faint traces of menthol mixed with cooked agave, spices, and oak. The finish is long yet pleasant: herbal and sweet. It doesn't have the depth and character of some other tequilas, but given its low price, it's a great fit for mixed drinks (or a smoother option for sipping neat at 40% ABV). 6.75/10

We're drinking tequila today because my wife wanted cookies and margaritas, and as a good husband who buys too much whiskey, I'm happy to indulge her. This is very reasonably priced and highly rated, and before I drown it in margarita mix and Tajin, I wanted to get a sense of what I'm dealing with. The nose is delightful! Cooked agave (obviously), vanilla, a hint of spice, with no hint of ethanol. The palate has a similar entry. It goes down smoothly and coats the palate, with a slight kick at the back. The finish is sugary sweet and lasts surprisingly long for a low-proof spirit. This isn't a complex Añejo Tequila or an adventurous Mezcal, but it's a delightful and affordable workhorse tequila for cold drinks on a hot Texas weekend afternoon. I particularly like reposado tequila for Margs because it offers a good balance of funky agave and some barrel influence without being overly oaky. Give it a try. Cheers!

Please remember I'm a complete novice when it comes to tequila! The aroma is briny and salty; it smells like a green lime, if such a thing exists. There's a touch of bar soap (I don't think it's from my own hands), and just a whisper of apple jam like my grandmother used to bring out for Easter. On the palate, it tastes like Lemonhead candies, and what I believe is agave, as it reminds me of aloe. A metallic sensation emerges unexpectedly in the middle. The finish delivers a clear lemon meringue sensation, with a very stainless steel metallic end. Some tannic bitterness from the barrel blends with a slight tartness. I had been using this for margaritas (where it performed excellently), but it holds its own by itself, my friend.

For my limited knowledge of tequila, this is likely one of the top value options. The distinct taste of sweet agave comes through, followed by hints of woody vanilla, pepper, and spice. It’s smooth enough for sipping and fantastic in all the tequila cocktails I’ve made. I'm aware that more refined and significantly pricier tequilas exist, but this makes for a solid go-to spirit. For context, I prefer to savor my drinks rather than down them quickly.
