While replenishing my bar supplies and searching for affordable choices, I easily opted for this familiar tequila from my preferred distillery. I've primarily used El Jimador in cocktails, easily detecting its bright citrus and vegetal notes, which were neither overwhelming nor particularly unique or special. I'm eager to try it neat and to make a paloma with an inexpensive Herradura-quality tequila right after this tasting. An intense raw agave aroma is immediately apparent, with the ethanol burning more strongly than expected for a tequila at this minimum proof. There's a hint of salt, and as I pull away, I detect roasted vegetables, basic vegetal notes, and carbon. Nothing else stands out, as is typical for the straightforward El Jimador range. My initial impression upon tasting was that it's quite watery, though not significantly different from the expected 80 proof. I anticipated muted flavors due to this, but they do develop, revealing agave, various raw vegetables with a notable presence of corn and tomato, surprisingly, and a touch of salt. Further sips bring out a subtle black pepper. The finish is light on the palate but leaves a mild burning sensation in the gums that transforms the black pepper into white pepper. Oddly enough, the vegetal and salt notes, combined with a very fresh agave flavor, remind me of the fundamental components of Mexican cuisine: chips and salsa. This tequila is remarkably simple yet delivers a vivid and complementary image and flavor profile that is striking, yet still very delicious. I can envision enhancing the quality of the base agave and other distillation aspects to truly elevate these wonderful foundational elements (similar to Herradura itself), but if you're seeking something that genuinely represents tequila and agave without a high cost, look no further. I'm interested in trying the aged version for an affordable reposado comparison, but given that Herradura blanco is actually aged slightly, I believe this El Jimador blanco might be a better representation of the unaged tequila this distillery offers.

It's similar to Espolon's Blanco but drier and with more pronounced menthol. Hints of pineapple are present, mixed with nutmeg, ginger, and white pepper. The drink is enjoyable, but the minerals and menthol make it less appealing than Espolon Blanco. Considering they are in the same price range, Espolon Blanco is the better choice. Yes, it has some mint and anise notes. This is a decent tequila at a decent price. The finish is inoffensive. The nose is surprisingly tropical and fruity with some earthy notes, but generally a light minerality. The palate is surprisingly viscous with some prickly spice and prevalent mint throughout. The flavor is light with a lot of mineral, but it's not bad. There's a little bit of rubber, but just a hint. It's not very interesting or complex, but it would be a good mixer. It's sweeter than 3 Amigos, but lacks the richness and complexity (not that there is much) with the caramel, vanilla presence. The earth and anise really save this, but it's just not very complex. It gives me a strange Irish whiskey vibe with its bitterness and oiliness. I would not want to sip this, but it can pass for mixing. It has that young flavor that reminds me of Balcones Baby Blue a bit:( It's not awful, but not a very good tequila. It does avoid that 1800 blanco mildewed cardboard taste though. This is a tremendous improvement on 1800 Blanco.

Tasting neat at room temperature. Appearance: Clear with average coating legs in the glass. Aroma: Lime, salt, and sweet grass with a hint of marshy funk. Palate: Thin feel, clean/neutral, saline, a little dry lime and damp wood--somewhat funky. More flavors emerge in the finish--light ethanol, baking spice, and grassy notes through a fairly long finish that tingles and turns slightly lime peel bitter/sour, then saline, then cleanly disappears. Perfectly fine for mixing, less interesting for sipping.

I generally don't favor lowland tequilas, but I purchased a 200mL bottle of this to compare with the reposado I tried last year, which was decent. The aroma is potent, sharp, and salty, with grapefruit and an underlying sweet putty note. The palate mirrors this contrast, being about one-third sweet (agave and stone fruit) and two-thirds salt and pepper. The finish is mineral and dry. It works well in margaritas.

I could consume this neat or on ice all evening. Smooth, rich, and well-balanced between earthy and fruity, with minimal pepper flavor. Surprising that such a pleasant tequila isn't more difficult to find or more expensive. Good in a ranch water but not as good as a peppery Hornitos silver in a margarita or paloma cocktail.

One of the cheapest bottles available that is 100% agave. It has some grassy/earthy agave flavor and a lot of white pepper. It didn't have as much burn as anticipated. Not ideal for sipping but suitable for margaritas and Palomas.
