Neat. First pour. A specific distillery's LP2 Medium Toast. I've really been enjoying these Down Home Toasted Finish items. The bourbon was decent; batch 1 was perhaps too young, and the toasted barrel rounded it out. The ryes have been amazing. Then I found this. I've heard these are about 4.5 years old. On the nose, it strongly resembles the toasted barrel bourbon. There's a good amount of grain coming off the glass, with slight bubble gum notes. Loads of butterscotch. Toffee too. There's a subtle hint of charred marshmallow, just a hint. Also getting burnt toast flakes, like the residue at the bottom of the toaster. Butterscotch really dominates; it's a candy-like aroma. The toasted barrel finish isn't as apparent here as it was with the Rye. Perfectly creamy mouthfeel. I love that. Butterscotch again, hitting the tongue immediately. Like pouring butterscotch syrup straight onto the tongue. The char is heavy on the tongue too. It transitions to more butterscotch and some really good marshmallow cream, like fluff. Butterscotch and pepper on the finish. Starting to get some Granny Smith apples throughout, both sweet and sour. It keeps changing, and the candy notes are subsiding a bit, giving way to a grain character. First impression: it's too young, and the toasted barrel finish didn't mask or overcome that. The butterscotch note is very strong when it hits, but it's a bit too expensive for a single-note, somewhat young product. I hope Down Home gets their hands on older stock someday. I want to try this stuff toasted at 7-9 years. So far, if you see this series and can only buy one, get the Rye. The Ryes are incredible. This one is just okay.
