Hayes Ragland 4.0

This robust Rum, originating from the Foursquare distillery in Barbados, is a combination of pot and column still rum. It spends at least 14 years maturing in ex-bourbon barrels, with some also aging in Madeira casks, before being bottled at 48% ABV. The initial aroma presents notes of sugar cane, dried and dark fruits, nuts, herbs, spices, and citrus. The palate is rich and spicy, featuring flavors of vanilla, toffee, raspberry, cherry, and orange zest. The finish is bold and warm, lasting a medium duration with hints of oak, clove, dark roasted coffee, dark chocolate, tobacco, cinnamon, ginger, and barrel char.

The nose was acceptable, but the taste! So sweet! That was unexpected. The sweetest rum/whisky/cognac or any spirit I have ever encountered. It's all about the oak/cask, with no discernible spirit character. Distillery character? Never heard of it. Perhaps it's not for me. Or perhaps I should save it for the dead of winter when it's freezing outside, then maybe some of this. And why is it colored? It's almost offensive. Initially, I rated it 2.5, but after comparing it with other rums/bourbons, I changed it to 3. If you appreciate sweet liquid oak, it's quite good, but if you prefer a cane juice spirit, there's no point.

Similar to its predecessor, this one also offers a lot of oak, but it's accompanied by equally strong fruity flavors that provide some balance. Another excellent Foursquare rum.

Willard Hess 4.3

Very astringent, almost mouth-watering. Vanilla, woody oak, and a nearly creamy texture. Strangely, it reminds me ever so slightly of Sauternes!

Wilhelmina Wiley 3.3

It's hot. Adding a large ice cube helps bring out vanilla, brown sugar, and oak.
