Don Julio Private Cask

This is an OHLQ Release from 2020, Barrel ID 314, Bottle #113. Don Julio is a top-tier tequila producer, consistently offering accessible and imported products. Adding a single barrel selection made it an easy purchase. This could have been an añejo, but they chose a reposado, which is more practical for use and allows retailers focusing on barrel tastings to emphasize the agave flavor over oak. I appreciate that the reviewer who added this didn't provide a rating or details like cask type, age, or ABV, even though the latter two were visible in the photo. It has a lighter straw color than most reposados I've seen, but the age is consistent. The aroma appears straightforward, with vanilla, caramel, salt, and agave notes atop a vegetal foundation. Despite the prominent saltiness in the scent, there's a distinct sweetness, though I hope it's not the sole focus. The initial taste is quite salty, coating the gums. Sweetness intensifies during this process, and with aeration, caramel and vanilla (primarily vanilla) quickly come to the forefront. The vegetal notes re-emerge but are overshadowed by the sweetness. The finish offers a slight spiciness, with all previous flavors gently fading over a medium duration. It wasn't as agave-focused as I anticipated from Don Julio, but perhaps the person who selected this barrel prioritized different characteristics, potentially disregarding Don Julio's usual style. Tequila shouldn't be overly sweet, but that's what happens when you rely on someone from Ohio for good taste. I also find it amusing that the website highlights the 85.4 proof with the phrase, '...for those who sip responsibly.' Frankly, a 2.7% ABV increase is unlikely to lead to any irresponsible decisions.
