About this bottle

This rum from Veracruz, Mexico, is made by fermenting and distilling fresh sugarcane juice. It is aged for six years in European oak and then rested in former wine casks and used bourbon barrels for an unspecified duration. The distinctive shrunken head (Tsanta) design adorns its plastic casing.

This rum was surprisingly poor. I purchased it for the bottle, I confess. However, as someone who owns a tiki bar and has tasted numerous rums (my current favorite for sipping is El Dorado 21 yr), I'd say the flavor profile is closer to pure alcohol than to caramel or cocoa. It tasted like a neutral spirit with added sugar. Perhaps it will work as a mixer, but frankly, I've encountered better rums in "well drinks." The bottle is attractive, though.

Giselle Camarillo 2.0

Firstly, my sense of smell is quite poor. On the nose, I only detect vanilla & caramel. On the palate, oak and a Bourbon bite. Which is great if you're drinking Bourbon. The finish is more like a Bourbon to me. I truly wished I liked this one more, because the owners are friends. A 2-star rum for mixing.

Wilbur Phelan 3.0

It hits hard initially. However, it mellows with flavors of coffee, allspice, chocolate, and nutmeg. It's quite drinkable.

Blaine Nielsen 3.8

I enjoy this one. It's distinct, with some very unusual spices. Plus, the bottle looks awesome on your bar!

Efrain Rutherford 2.5

To be candid, I acquired it for the container. The rum was barely palatable in mixed drinks.

Amari Kiser 3.5

I detect more caramel and spice than hogo, but it's a really smooth and enjoyable rum.
