Concannon Irish Whiskey

Light gold hue. Streaky on the glass sides. Smells like vanilla pipe tobacco, lemon drop, peeled apples, and pear. There's a strong sulfuric cabbage/broccoli presence. A bit of fusel gas hangs over the edge. The initial taste is overwhelmingly gasoline, fusels, and sulfur – it's a very "gassy" spirit. Pushing past that, you detect subtle vanilla, lemon drop, and an ashtray-like tobacco note. The conclusion is reminiscent of siphoning gas and getting a bit in your mouth. Yes, pear, apple skins, vanilla, and even some mocha powder are present. However, the smoky exhaust notes dominate everything else. I don't truly dislike this spirit; it's not unpleasant, but it's not a light or easy drink straight. It fares better diluted or mixed. It has the character of car exhaust.

Unimpressive. Quite dull. While I'm not fond of wine and have never tasted Concannon, I personally prefer whiskeys with more complexity than this offers.

[07.19.2016] Acceptable Irish whiskey. This one is sweet and floral, smooth, and not complex. An easy drinker that I'd keep on hand if it were inexpensive.

Easily drinkable Irish whiskey. Finished in petite sirah barrels. A good choice for my peat-loving partner and my Macallan-liking self.

Unremarkable, neither good nor bad. At $18, it would be a good deal if it cost closer to $10.

Vanilla and honey on the nose. Pleasant mouthfeel with an oaky finish. Not overly alcoholic.
