So, I decided to dive into some local offerings. Seeking a rye for mixing in a Manhattan or Old Fashioned while enjoying a drink from a local distillery (and the wife liked the bottle for potential decorative use with lights), I acquired this. According to the label, this particular rye is "100% rye whiskey made with Scottish yeast and finished in Syrah wine barrel." Additionally, it's bottled at 90% ABV. All promising signs. The color is a deep amber with a faint purple tint. It begins with a sweet grape wine and dill-infused aroma. Pumpernickel and raisin, maple syrup bread with wisps of vanilla and milk chocolate. A sweet scent, surprisingly so for a rye. The body is extremely light. Based on the aroma, one might expect a rich and heavy palate. The sweet grape jam is present initially but then shifts to black pepper spice with vanilla and caramel. Throughout the palate, the grape jam remains noticeable alongside the peppery sweetness, all the way to the finish. The grape sweetness persists. Oak dryness is not pronounced. This is the first indication of wood character, followed by a slight kick of black pepper. This is close to being a quality dram. The Syrah wine finish contributes a pleasant sweetness. In comparison, it shares characteristics with Sagamore Port Finish or High West A Midwinter Night's Dram. A high bar to meet. However, it's not quite in the same category. Like comparing minor league to the majors. As a sipper, it's adequate. As a mixer, it might work best in a Manhattan due to the wine finish. However, for the price, better and less expensive choices are available. [84/100][$55][Tasted: 11/25/22]
