Nose: Agave is prominent initially, quickly followed by a delightful wave of red wine notes – strawberry, cherry, dried red fruit, pineapple, a hint of oak, and a suggestion of smoke or char. Palate: Exceptionally sweet with red fruit soaked in alcohol, cherries, raspberry, strawberry, all blended with agave, and just the right amount of bracing from cooked vegetables and earthier notes. Finish: Very sweet again, with a cherry syrup character, some oak, a touch of cough syrup, mint, and red wine barrel oak. This is likely the most unconventional tequila I've sampled. A friend recommended it, mentioning that he and his wife both enjoy pouring it over ice and sipping it with friends. It's incredibly easy to drink. It's actually too sweet for my preference, often drinking like a cordial. It won't become a regular purchase (it's also too expensive for that), but it's fascinating to see what tequila can achieve when aged in red wine barrels. I've served it at parties with great success – people really enjoy it. For my palate, perhaps an ice cube would temper that sweetness sufficiently. Maybe. About this bottle
Gran Cava de Oro Tequila Extra Añejo is crafted from blue weber agave harvested from both Jalisco's Los Altos and Tequila Valley regions, with plants aged 7 to 10 years. Maestro Tequilero Gildardo Partida Melendrez directs the process at Tequila Puerta de Hierro Distillery (NOM 1477), utilizing traditional pot stills for double distillation. Instead of ex-bourbon barrels, the distillery ages the spirit for 5 years in French oak barrels that previously held red wine. This extra añejo, bottled at 38% ABV, is exclusively available in Mexico; it is exported to the US and Canada under the "Gran Cava de Oro" label.

Delicious and sweet! Far superior to typical cheap college tequila! It has sweet, floral, honey, and brown sugar notes, with a very light finish. It drinks like a bourbon. Enjoy it neat, and you won't be disappointed!
Brown sugar, caramel, and honey. A bit too sweet for my taste, but it drank exceptionally well.
So far, one of the best. It's sweet but has a kick. I just wish it was a little smoother.
Butterscotch, caramel, vanilla. Sweet and mellow.
Smooth, with a lasting sweet sensation
