Caol Ila 2004 Cask Strength (Gordon & MacPhail)

Tasted without knowing the bottle. Smell: a touch of smoke Flavor: fiery, somewhat smoky, bottled at cask strength - sometimes this is pleasant, other times it's too intense. Adding a little water reveals some vanilla notes from the oak. I enjoy it more when it's at a lower proof, presenting as light, moderately sweet, with a smoky aroma. Oak profile: bourbon or fresh oak Distillery? Maybe Springbank or Bruichladdich

In my opinion, it's not as smoky as an Ardbeg. I usually add a bit of cold water to all my whiskey, but with this one, it's essential in my view to do so to appreciate its flavors; otherwise, its strength overwhelms all the flavors and aromas.

Nose: sweet peanut, ripe banana, briny sea salt, bonfire Palate: spicy, earthy, barley malt, raisin, fig, fruit cake Finish: long, peaty, salty ash

This single malt is fantastic. Among the greatest Caol Ila expressions I've tried so far. Surprisingly mellow, even neat. They chose wisely...

I believe it was the 2008 15-year-old cask strength.
