Distillery Description: This robust and rich rum contains spices that evoke California's agricultural landscape and are inspired by the state's more grounded inhabitants. One could say it resembles a drive through coastal orange groves tended by free spirits who forgo deodorant, opting instead for clove, cinnamon, and vanilla essential oils (we all know someone like this). Best enjoyed on the rocks, neat, or during a communal gathering on the beach. My initial impression was that it smelled and tasted as if filtered through worn-out Birkenstocks. Many strange and unpleasant aromas and flavors were present. After letting it sit for a few months, I decided to revisit it. The nose now features a prominent scent of clove, ginger, vanilla, and citrus, reminding me of incense burned to mask the smell of cannabis mixed with a hint of body odor and sassafras. If you can overlook the aroma, the palate is not terrible; it's somewhat creamy and semi-sweet with a touch of spice, citrus, and vanilla. The finish is of medium length, spicy, and a mixed bag of citrus, cloves, and vanilla that I find unappealing. Bottle finished 10/31/22. The aroma has mellowed considerably, still a bit unusual, with orange peel and clove standing out. It's quite palatable now, and the finish is acceptable. An intriguing rum that sparked lively discussion when shared. Rating increased to average.
