Calvados Berneroy XO

Had no high hopes, mostly wanting to explore a new brandy option. As a fan of cognac and Armagnac, this seemed promising initially. Smelled strongly of caramel apple and aged oak. The taste felt a bit weak and followed the nose at first, but then developed into leather and a touch of bitterness. A strange, burning plastic scent on the finish ruined it for me. Attempting to mix this has been tough. When substituting for whiskey in an Old Fashioned, that sharp, bitter tannic quality remains, despite the initial pleasant notes of apple pie and caramel. Mixed with passion fruit liqueur and topped with club soda, it's drinkable as a warm-weather beverage, but not something I'd ever choose. While I'm interested in this type of spirit, I need to find one, perhaps even younger, that doesn't end up overly bitter.

The aroma has green apple, oak, and a hint of pear. The palate offers baking spices and cooked apples, complemented by a medium body with oak and a bright green apple sweetness. The finish presents a delightful note of caramel green apples, reminiscent of a fairground treat. As someone who primarily drinks cognac, I find this experience familiar yet intriguing. It's lovely and very accessible, particularly given its affordable price.

On the nose, there's fruit sweetness. Roasted apple mellowed by extended oak aging provides a touch of earth and vanilla before the apple ends cleanly. It's not excessively sweet, but bracing like a cognac. It has a deep color and moderate body. Outstanding enjoyed neat or in a traditional mixed drink. Remarkable value for an XO as well.

The apple is very noticeable on the palate, but not too much. There is a good spice and oak kick on the back end with a short finish. If you're a cognac fan its worth a try. It paired very well with several cigars if that's your thing.

This calvados leans a bit more earthy than usual, but I appreciate a touch of funk, so it appeals to me! Works well as a cognac alternative in mixed drinks, offering a sweet boost.

Having visited the area, the regional character is evident. It has a funky, grassy apple flavor that reminds me of certain soft cheeses.
