The Cachaça Batista distillery started in 1943 with José Batista de Oliveira at Fazenda Cachoeirinha. During WWII, Brazil faced a sugar shortage, so José Batista grew a sugarcane type called Argentina or Tucumã for making rapaduras. This led him to distill the rapadura broth, creating a legendary local drink. In 1958, the brand, then Caninha Batista, got its star logo and "Estrela das Gerais" slogan, popular until 1974 when production stopped. Today, very few old bottles remain with collectors. At 90, José Batista told his son-in-law Marco Antonio Afonso da Mota he wanted to restart the project. Marco took on the challenge, learning the cachaça-making secrets to continue his father-in-law's vision and the drink's exceptional quality. In 2008, Marco Antônio and his son, Marco Elísio, built new Cachaça Batista facilities at Fazenda Boa Sorte, reviving a 70+ year tradition with modern methods. The new facility honors the brand's history and aims for lasting success in the growing market for Brazilian cachaça. The bar Timbuca in Belo Horizonte put its name on a Batista cachaça (Timbuca). It has a golden yellow color, smells of dried fruits, honey, and vanilla. It tastes balanced with acidity and sweetness, the alcohol is well-integrated, and it has a long finish.
