Cachaça Rio do Engenho, based in Ilhéus, Bahia, originates from land that once housed Brazil's first sugar mill. The sugarcane grown there in 1537 for sugar production vanished with the mill, leaving only ruins. However, cultivation resumed in 2005 with a new setup and objective: to produce a distinctly Brazilian distillate from fermented sugarcane juice. The owners relocated from Campinas, São Paulo, to Ilhéus seeking a better quality of life. Farming and cachaça production were entirely new to them. Luiz Fernando Galletti, a Chemistry and Computer Science graduate, attended a master still course in 2004. Initially, the plan was to make a drink for friends as a hobby, but the venture grew and became professional. Cachaça Rio do Engenho Reserva 4 Madeiras, a 500ml bottle, is aged for three years in balsam, amburana, itiúba, and cinnamon laurel barrels. This wood combination imparts unique qualities to the spirit, characterized by woody notes, a golden yellow hue, and layered flavors that create a striking aroma and unmistakable taste. It is light, with an alcohol content of 38%.
