Cachaça Rio do Engenho, based in Ilhéus, southern Bahia, traces its history to the site of Brazil's first sugarcane mill. The sugarcane that thrived there in 1537 for sugar production disappeared along with the mill's ruins. Cultivation resumed in 2005 with a new facility and objective: to produce a genuine Brazilian distillate from fermented sugarcane juice. The owners moved from Campinas, São Paulo, to Ilhéus seeking a better lifestyle. Farming and cachaça were unfamiliar to their daily routines. Luiz Fernando Galletti, with degrees in Chemistry and Computer Science, attended a master still course in 2004. The initial intention was to create a drink for acquaintances as a pastime, but the enterprise expanded considerably and turned professional. Cachaça Rio do Engenho Carvalho Americano (700ml) is a blended product. It is aged for two years in French and American oak barrels. This mix of woods imparts unique qualities to the spirit. The oak notes, golden yellow color, and layered flavors create a striking aroma and a distinctive taste. It is light with an alcohol content of 38%. Source: Cachaçaria Nacional.
