Brazilian law permits branding a purchased product if it's officially documented. Details on Geito de Matto cachaça are scarce online, but it originates from Mato Grosso. The distiller is the same as the renowned Cachaça Batista, established in 1943 by José Batista de Oliveira at Fazenda Cachoeirinha, in Sacramento, Minas Gerais, near the Serra da Canastra National Park. During a World War II sugar shortage, José Batista grew Argentina or Tucumã sugarcane on his land, used for making sugar cakes to compensate. This inspired him to ferment and distill the juice from these sugar cakes, starting the production of a legendary local drink. In 1958, the brand, then called Caninha Batista, adopted its famous star logo and the slogan "Estrela das Gerais", winning over drinkers until activities ceased in 1974. Today, very few early bottles remain as prized possessions. At 90, Mr. José Batista expressed his wish to his son-in-law, Marco Antonio Afonso da Mota, to revive the project. Marco accepted the challenge, taking on the knowledge and techniques for crafting fine cachaça. He continues his father-in-law's vision, preserving the drink's legacy and exceptional quality. In 2008, driven by enthusiasm and business acumen, Marco Antônio and his son, Marco Elísio, built new Cachaça Batista facilities at Fazenda Boa Sorte, reviving a tradition over 70 years old with modern methods. The new operation solidifies its role as an enterprise honoring the brand's heritage and ushering in a new era for Brazilian artisanal cachaça. Tasting notes: clear, transparent, fragrant, with floral, herbal, and vegetal notes. It has a sweetness of the base ingredient and sugar, with balanced acidity and alcohol, and a medium-long finish.
