Paraty in Rio de Janeiro state is a Cachaça Origin area, like Salinas in Minas Gerais and Abaíra in Bahia. Paraty received the first Geographical Indication seal for cachaça, and three years ago, it filed for Designation of Origin recognition. Unfortunately, government geographical indications are slow and bureaucratic. Cachaça Coqueiro comes from Fazenda Cabral in Paraty, Rio de Janeiro. The Mello family has been distilling here since 1803, using their ancestors' methods with wild yeast fermentation. In 1980, Eduardo Mello acquired the Coqueiro brand, established in 1940. Following regional custom, the spirit matures only in peanut and French oak barrels, alongside stainless steel ones. Coqueiro rests for six months in stainless steel and 2 years in French oak. It's strong at 44% ABV, with a light oak presence suitable for sipping neat or mixing in cocktails. It has an alcoholic character, with the oak noticeable but subtle.
