Founded in 1943 by José Batista de Oliveira, Cachaça Batista began at Fazenda Cachoeirinha in Sacramento, Triângulo Mineiro, near the Serra da Canastra National Park. Amidst World War II and Brazil's sugar shortage, José Batista grew the Argentina or Tucumã sugarcane variety on his land to address the deficit. He then conceived the idea of fermenting and distilling the juice from rapaduras, initiating the production of what would become a regional legend. In 1958, the brand, initially known as Caninha Batista, adopted its iconic star emblem and the slogan "Estrela das Gerais", captivating consumers until its operations ceased in 1974. Today, a select few possess rare bottles from that era as treasured possessions. At 90 years old, Mr. José Batista expressed his wish to his son-in-law, Marco Antonio Afonso da Mota, to revive his venture. Marco accepted the challenge, taking on the craft's secrets and techniques to continue his father-in-law's ambition, preserving the drink's legendary status and exceptional quality. In 2008, driven by passion and a strong business sense, Marco Antônio and his son, Marco Elísio, established new Cachaça Batista facilities at Fazenda Boa Sorte. This move revived a tradition spanning over seven decades, enhanced by contemporary production methods. The new distillery now solidifies its standing as a business that honors the brand's heritage while ushering in a new phase for its presence in a market increasingly open to Brazilian artisanal cachaça. Cachaça Batista Amburana 600ml is aged for eighteen months in amburana barrels, a wood native to Brazil. With a 40% alcohol content, it presents a light profile. This aging imparts a subtle, sweet woody character that appeals to a variety of tastes. Presented in traditional beer bottles, it's part of a retro collection, recreating 1950s label designs. Heads up! Be cautious! This particular batch exhibited a musty scent and flavor. Capim Canastra has designated the cachaças aged in Amburana and Cavalho by Alambique Batista with the name "A Gata".
