Bushmills 1608 Anniversary Edition

Neat. Sample received. The aroma is surprisingly rich for 92 proof, evoking a dense coffee cake with its sugary, cinnamon-spiced crust and inclusions. There are accompanying fruit notes with a range, including kiwi, strawberries, and honeydew. A faint hint of chocolate is present, specifically the kind that hardens instantly on an ice cream cone. I'm also picking up an oatmeal cookie scent. It's a delightful and robust Irish aroma. The texture is subtle yet not watery, resembling skim milk. Initial taste reveals minimal flavor, with the faintest vanilla upon first contact. It develops on the latter half of the mid-palate, offering a vanilla shortbread cookie essence. The finish intensifies with notes of vanilla pudding, a touch of strawberry, cracked black pepper, and a bit of chocolate. There's also a slight metallic sensation, like licking a battery. The nose was exceptional, and the finish enhances it somewhat. Ultimately, I anticipated more from the taste than what was delivered. It's a pleasant whiskey, but this sample doesn't inspire me to seek out a full bottle.

My initial experience involved a damaged top. The bottle was dusty and likely not stored optimally. On the nose, I detected dark fruits and spice, but there was an unusual character, unsure if it was due to the barley or something else. The palate was full of spices, and that unusual character persisted. The finish was lengthy and warm. I'm anticipating the next tasting and hope my impression will change.

One of the superior Bushmills expressions – lightly toasted oak, ripe pear, sweet breakfast cereal (the kind that would make a certain diet doctor spin in his grave), and a mild spice on the back of the palate. Excellent spirit.

Although I favor Redbreast for typical Irish enjoyment, this whiskey was simply delightful. It had a great aroma, medium peat with a touch of pepper and spice.

Nose: honey, charred notes, vanilla, and clean linen. Palate: oily, savory, almost like fresh laundry. Finish: sweet, relatively smooth, with flavors of bacon or sausage.

It tastes like Jameson with a touch more complexity and barrel influence.
