The color is chestnut, with a thin film clinging to the glass as slow legs form. Nose: 18/20 Heavy peat smoke dominates, thick and sooty, with a whisper of grilled meats, possibly very charred salmon. After a bit, it gets subtly briny, with barbecue and molasses sweetness in the background, plus lemon zest. It evokes a charcoal grill on a beach, making the mouth water. Palate: 35/40 Immediate intense smoke. The peat level might rival Octomore, but it's sootier and saltier. Beyond smoke, there are greasy charred logs from a recently doused beach fire, burnt toast, toasted seaweed, other low tide detritus, a mysterious note suggesting "burnt electrical," and sweet brown sugar with tart lemon. Finish: 33/40 Medium-long and straightforward, mostly the lingering soot and charcoal. Spent coffee grounds, mild salinity, and citrus notes are present. Not groundbreaking, but still quite pleasing. With Water: A few drops introduce intriguing herbal scents on the nose, notably oregano and subtle floral notes. The palate is mostly the same, but the finish becomes "juicier," similar to a double IPA, with more grapefruit and orange citrus. Total: 86/100 Final thoughts: The dechar/rechar hogshead maturation seems to have amplified the already strong peat to an extreme. While it hints at complexity beneath the smoke, the distillate and cask type were likely too much for full maturation, obscuring it. This bottle embodies "whole ass one thing." It excels as a heavily peated scotch, and that's it. I'm pleased with this purchase, offering an Octomore-level experience for under half the price. Price: $89 Would recommend: yes Would buy: yes
