Nose (undiluted): Fresh cereal and sweet/bittersweet citrus fruits like tangello, sherbet lemon, and mandarin. A pronounced grapefruit aroma. Oily floral notes and significant brine. A hint of smoke is present. Nose (with water): The aforementioned notes are present but softened by a sweet layer that intensifies over time. It even develops a faint medicinal aroma reminiscent of Laphroaig hospital bandages. Palate (undiluted): Intense, very salty, and astringent – so extremely dry it causes puckering. A hot, peppery spice emerges during development. Very sharp and tangy, it vibrates with energy like a rattlesnake. This palate is exceptionally powerful, making Corryvrecken seem mild and relaxed by comparison. The texture is oily yet very dry. Palate (with water): A strong and assertive peatiness becomes apparent, with the salt and pepper now located at the back of the tongue. Notes of ginger and hard salt licorice emerge, along with chewing tobacco and pine resin. A subtle sweetness gradually appears over a long period. Finish: Long, with spicy, smoky, and briny characteristics. Adding water slightly mellows the finish but does not shorten it or alter its profile. I thoroughly enjoyed this whisky, but it's not suitable for novices. Introducing this to a beginner, especially neat, would likely result in them spitting it out and becoming permanently discouraged from scotch whisky. However, for those accustomed to salty-citrus, cask-strength whiskies with a dry profile, this offers a highly characterful, uncompromising, and satisfying dram. It's one of those very assertive whiskies that benefits greatly from dilution to fully appreciate its nuances. Don't attempt to endure it out of stubbornness, as water is essential for unlocking the aromas and flavors that are otherwise tightly bound by the alcohol. Tasting this only neat means you are missing half of the experience. This batch is the spiciest and most potent Tempest encountered thus far, and it's the first Bowmore I've tasted in a considerable time that has truly captivated me, though it's certainly not a relaxing nightcap! This particular batch truly lives up to the name "Tempest" – it's a powerful, overwhelming typhoon with a smoky, marine, and woody character. "Very Good": 85/100 (4 stars)
