Boardroom Spirits Ship's Cat Barrel Aged Rum

A fantastic business trip to Lansdale/Telford, PA last week resulted in a great collection from this neighborhood distillery that I'm eager to share. I discovered this establishment on my first evening there while seeking out some of my preferred items, and I was thrilled to discuss spirits with the exceptionally welcoming staff. As I sampled nearly all of their offerings (and they produce a significant amount), we engaged in great conversation and exchanged opinions, which led to cocktails being prepared and unlabelled bottles being brought out from the back for "revisiting" tastes. The rums from Boardroom were the first spirits I tried, and I remember them the most, as I gradually became quite intoxicated and quickly overwhelmed my palate as the spirits continued to flow. So, revisiting what I recall being one of the sweetest yet least impactful aged rums I've encountered so far. Before commenting on the color, I must note the sediment present at the bottom of this and all bottles on the distillery's shelf. Given the low proof, I find it surprising that any sediment exists, although it's possible water was added without any filtration. Behind the particles, the color is dark gold with a light roasted chestnut hue. The air is filled with the scent of molasses, but it's sweetened by natural wood sugars from the oak rather than the usual cloying sweetness. The ethanol is surprisingly prominent initially despite the low proof, with molasses, brown sugar, and caramel upfront, accompanied by much subtler notes of green apple, raisin, and honeysuckle (remarkably specific notes here). The body is very light, but flavors of roasted cacao and brown sugar develop rapidly, while the dry, sweetened oak coats most of the mouth and lingers. Floral notes are also perceptible, and only towards the finish does some molasses become apparent. Subsequent sips reveal more dry characteristics, but the accessible sweetness and barrel flavors contribute to an easily enjoyable glass. While my expertise and palate for rum are still developing, I recognize a quality spirit when I taste it. This rum appeals to both dedicated whiskey or bourbon enthusiasts and those who enjoy rum but dislike overly sweet profiles. A resounding success from such a small, local distillery, and even more impressive considering the area within a 50-mile radius uses this as their standard aged rum; a wonderful endorsement of local business while also benefiting the consumer. You certainly won't find this outside of Lansdale (the distillery employees were insistent on not focusing on distribution), but if you happen to be in the vicinity or spot it, definitely give it a try.
