About this bottle

Boann Distillery, a family-operated facility in Co. Meath, Ireland, launched three single pot still whiskeys in mid-2024. The mash bill for each utilized Irish-grown grains, including malted barley, unmalted barley, oats, and rye. This particular release underwent initial maturation in charred ex-bourbon barrels before being finished in French oak Madeira casks that had previously held cognac, sourced from Justino's Madeira Wines. It is bottled at 47% ABV and will be available in the US from January 2025, with a suggested price of $69.

Glass: Glencairn, rested 15 minutes. Color: Light amber. Nose: Abundant cereal and fruit aromas. Palate: A combination of baking spice and oak. Finish: The finish isn't particularly hot but is surprisingly long, featuring more of that baking spice. Splash: No new flavors emerged. Overall: 8.5/10 - It began with a rather unremarkable nose, suggesting it might be another standard, average Irish whiskey. Against my initial low expectations, this delivered a surprising punch of flavor on the palate and an impressive finish, even for a finished Irish whiskey. The time in ex-bourbon barrels is evident.

An apple vinegar aroma on the nose gives way to more apple and deeper raisin undertones. It drinks lighter than the nose suggests, with a bit of acidity. The finish is quick. I wish the palate matched the nose better.
