Black Button Distillery in Rochester, NY, offers this limited release straight rye whiskey. Its mash bill consists entirely of New York State grains, specifically 95% rye and 5% malted barley. This bottling is exclusively available at the distillery's tasting room.

A flavorful young rye with a subtly sweet finish. A great introduction for those new to the spirit, as demonstrated by the positive reactions it received from curious shoppers at the New York Rye Week stall at Union Square Greenmarket today. (I mean curious people, not people shopping for peculiar vegetables, though there are plenty of those at this market.)
Is this now called Empire rye? The nose has a dusty grain aroma, with baking spices mingled with nuts and grain. The finish has wood notes. It might pair well with a lemon twist.
The aroma brings to mind a pencil case from my childhood, complete with colored pencils and eraser shavings. It's a fun trip down memory lane.
Lots of leather and dried fruit at first, followed by orange peel, wood, and anise. A young, interesting rye.
