Benrinnes 1995 19 Year (Alexander Murray & Co.)

This spirit, from the same year and bottler, but aged 23 years, delivered substantially more character than its 40% ABV indicated. The nose presented jasmine, lemon, apples, and custard, leading to rich malt flavors on the palate and a vibrant oak spice finish with a whisper of salt. I'm uncertain of its retail price as it was a sample and a full bottle isn't available online, possibly delayed by the pandemic, given the bottler's March video about it.

Nose: Distinct grassiness, general sweetness, salted apples, a little toffee appears late. Not an encouraging start. Palate: An initial wave of grassiness followed by light, spiced carameled apple and vanilla; it’s subtle and smooth. Finish: Longer than expected for 40% ABV, with subtle sweetness and spice; very pleasant. Once you get past the nose, it’s a very drinkable whiskey.

It's unlike anything else I've tasted. The flavor emerges very late. To my inexperienced palate, it starts like inexpensive, flat whiskey but then surprises with complexity. I'm giving it 4.0 out of respect for the experience, even though it's not my preferred style.

Well rounded! Apple and salt on the nose. Smoke, vanilla, and earthy notes on the palate.

Really, really solid. It's got floral and pleasant notes, even though it's not at full proof.
