About this bottle

Prichard’s utilizes two historical family techniques. The first involves selecting a smaller, more specific portion of each distillation run, enabling the bottling of whiskeys with less added water for enhanced flavor. The second family secret pertains to mellowing the whiskey while it remains in the barrels. Unlike most Tennessee whiskey producers who rely on charcoal filtering, Prichard follows his great grandfather's example by maturing his whiskeys in new oak casks with a deep, 3-millimeter "alligator" char. The whiskey is primarily distilled from sweet white corn, with smaller quantities of rye and malted barley, using pot stills. It is aged for 10 years in both new, charred American oak barrels and 15-gallon rum casks before being reduced to 80 proof with limestone-filtered spring water and bottled without filtering.

Prichard's Tennessee whiskey is one-of-a-kind, with a specific exemption to the state's law that mandates all "Tennessee Whiskey" must undergo charcoal filtering of new make spirits prior to aging using the Lincoln County method. Prichard's was among the three Tennessee distilleries (alongside Jack Daniels and Dickel) in operation when the legislation was passed, and it's the only one that doesn't use charcoal filtering. Instead, it's matured in barrels with a heavy alligator char, yielding a flavor profile that sits between the old-style Dickel (before the Cascade Hollow rebranding) and Jack Daniels. Don't anticipate a standard Tennessee whiskey experience. The aroma presents peppery notes, hints of leather, and a subtle vanilla undertone. The initial taste is sweet, then transitions to a spicy profile with cigar box characteristics on the palate. The texture feels a bit light, lacking some richness. The finish sees the spice gradually diminish, leaving a subtle woody impression.

Three stars total, with one solely for the aroma. It has a powerful smell of homemade marshmallows and vanilla bean cheesecake. Absolutely adored it. Unfortunately, the taste does not match, feeling somewhat watery and weak to my palate. It's sweet, for sure, but so understated that it fades away before I can even consider enjoying it further. Nevertheless, that fragrance alone makes me eager to explore other, more substantial products from this distillery.

My notes are for the Tennessee Malt Whiskey, which seems distinct from this expression, but I cannot locate it here. It's robust and reminds me of rye. There's ample spice, featuring nutmeg and cinnamon. It also has a curious atypical note, somewhat reminiscent of Tullamore. It's not quite to my preference, though it could be precisely what others are looking for.

I've played around with older whiskies and bourbons, but had never tasted a younger one until now. This distillery is close by and still young, but they are already crafting spirits that win awards. This whiskey is excellent! Reasonably priced and enjoyable to sip!

The aroma is like wood dust and oak, also toffee, vanilla, and caramel. Hints of cherry are present too. The flavor is like brown sugar, caramel, and dark fruits.

I made the mistake of not realizing this is NOT bourbon. It's a malted whiskey, and not a very good one.
