This is always the local gins that possess higher, more impressive proofs, but it's still commendable to support local businesses (especially those right around the corner). Furthermore, a gin with a rye mashbill is a rarity, so this expression checks many positive boxes. Based on the description, the botanical count appears to be moderate to low, which I anticipate will allow the spicy rye character to come forward. The nose is dominated by juniper and floral notes, with ethanol beginning to sting the nostrils. Citrus is minimal, though present, with orange taking the lead. Not much else is detectable, leading me to hope for a pleasing simplicity in flavor. The initial taste is intensely floral with a faint cereal undertone. The citrus soon appears, followed shortly by the juniper. Everything is quite standard until the rye flavors emerge; with some aeration and at 93 proof, this gin bursts into a spicy juniper mix. The finish leaves a tingling sensation on the gums, similar to rye whiskey, yet the juniper and floral notes persist until the end. Very little positive originates from or enters Dayton, Ohio, so it's gratifying to discover something worthwhile from this city. Belle of Dayton offers some "curious" spirits and flavored vodkas that I've observed, so it's good to know they are capable of producing a well-crafted gin. Approach this with the understanding of a contemporary American take on gin, but the rye's spice serves as an excellent enhancer to any traditional dry gin. The distillery's modest history is also a nice detail. If you intend to support this unremarkable city, this would be an excellent method. However, if your objective is to add some excitement to your liquor collection, that is a far superior reason to acquire this. It's a good choice for supporting local, but an even better choice for adding spice to your bar.
