Balblair 2005 1st Release

I might have just found my favorite Balblair so far - there's a lot to appreciate here. I'm especially impressed by its fruitiness, given it was aged exclusively in bourbon casks. The nose offers notes of fruitcake and almonds, both quite pleasant, though they eventually become a bit too prominent. The palate is almost sherry-like, with a faint hint of smoke, similar to striking matches. And while the finish is slightly bitter, it's also quite smooth and long, with lingering pepper on the tongue. I really enjoyed it, and there's considerable complexity despite a color resembling white wine.

From the 2017 bottling. Quite pleasant, smooth, and fruity on the nose. In contrast, it's very sharp initially, almost shocking to the palate. Abundant fruitiness (primarily citrus, like lemon and orange peel), with hints of honey and vanilla both aromatically and on the tongue. Not overly spicy and with a faint trace of smoke (not peated). Oak and barrel notes are discernible at times. Green apples are also present. Additionally, a subtle touch of floral dust and pollen (reminiscent of meadows). The finish is very agreeable and smooth. Truly gentle and satisfying. Very warming and calming. Ultimately fulfilling.

I hadn't tried a Balblair before and had no preconceptions. It's actually a decent spirit; I wouldn't purchase it again, but it's enjoyable, and I'd drink it if offered at a gathering. Bottled at 46% ABV with a pale straw color. Only four notes on the nose, but a lovely aroma: cake, butter, chocolate butter cake (haha), and a touch of herbs. The palate is more complex and interesting: hay, tobacco, smoke, ash, bitter chocolate, brownie. It has an oily, warm texture, and the finish is medium-long, warm, but pleasant. Overall, I'm giving this dram an 88 out of 100. Cheers!

My initial experience with this bottle was quite disappointing. However, allowing the next sample to rest in the glass for 30 minutes made a significant difference. The following day's dram was delightful. It was creamy, with notes of raisin, dates, some herbaceous elements, and a dry conclusion. A subtle touch of smoke was present. I'm genuinely appreciating this one.

The initial aroma is somewhat off-putting, but banana notes emerge as it opens up. It's surprisingly sweet considering the nose, with flavors of banana, pear, and an almost plum-like quality. The finish has a burn, but the fruity notes do persist.

The nose is somewhat glue-like, almost like sake. Very little flavor compared to the Glendelough I had previously, mild vanilla and ethanol-like sake notes. All the Balblairs I've tried have been solid 3.5 experiences. This one is a 2.5.
