Baker's Small Batch Bourbon

Nose presents as nutty and leathery, with oak and orange zest. This is the essence of whiskey, rich and potent. The flavor is sweeter than the aroma, followed by spice and heat. I anticipated something closer to a Booker's, but it diverges in a pleasing way. More clove and spice are balanced by caramelized sweetness. A faint bitterness is the sole drawback, though I am comparing it to a 2019 George T Stagg, so take that with a grain of salt.

This is a solid, classic bourbon. I appreciate the proof and the lingering finish. I enjoy the agreeable caramelized peanut/popcorn scent. I do not like the price. I believe this should be approximately $20 less. It's not distinctive enough to warrant price increases and bourbon hunting. I likely wouldn't purchase it again, but that's mainly because at its price point (even at suggested retail), there are superior whiskeys available. Okay, so I sampled a bottle of this years ago. Now I'm revisiting it for a review. Baker's Small Batch, not the current version. I consider this a standard Bourbon with caramel notes. However, this is also among the top Bourbons that truly benefits from a few drops of water. It brings it to life. There are plenty of baking spices and some peppery notes that bloom, and the finish is longer with some cinnamon.

2.5 stars - Quite nice; sampled at multiple bars Reminiscent of Jim Beam white label, but with all the harshness smoothed out. This used to sit unsold on the shelf. The branding was awful. Jim Beam Bottle in Bond, Jim Beam Single Barrel, and Bookers all offered better bang for your buck. I'm very happy to see Bakers has been completely redone.

It smells of butterscotch and a bit of orange zest. The taste mirrors the aroma, but the interplay between sweet and slightly spicy elements creates an interesting profile with flavors of butterscotch, orange, and a hint of pepper and wood spice. The medium finish lingers pleasantly.
