Auchroisk 10 Year (Gordon and MacPhail Discovery)

Nose: Citrus notes (juice and peel, pineapple), vanilla, and mild spices. The pineapple becomes more noticeable over time. Palate: The taste is generally fruity, light, and slightly spicy. Sweet lemon and grapefruit appear at first, shifting to orange, pineapple, and mango as it develops. There's a hint of young oak, a bit of white pepper, ginger, and cinnamon. The texture is adequate but unremarkable. Finish: Brief. Fruity and oaky notes are present along with a cereal flavor that wasn't apparent initially. It's a good, straightforward fruity whisky without significant flaws, but it also lacks depth, intrigue, or staying power. Adding water made little difference; the finish slightly lengthened, but no hidden aromas or flavors surfaced. This single malt is characteristic of Gordon and MacPhail's entry-level "Discovery" range, but it's the youngest and least engaging I've tried. Like others in the line, it's capable, drinkable, and versatile. For its price, it faces competition from more interesting single malts, making its value as a sipping dram marginal. However, it holds up well against blended scotches in a similar price range, making it a viable option for mixing. I might be rating this a bit generously at 81/100 given its average nature, but the quality of distillation and aging is undeniable, just barely earning that score.
