Arran The Bothy Quarter Cask Batch 1

Information: An Arran without an age statement, matured in ex-bourbon barrels and finished in American oak quarter casks for 18 months. A quarter cask, as the name suggests, is a small barrel holding about one-quarter the volume of a standard barrel. It's often used with younger spirits to "speed up" their maturation. Because the surface area to volume ratio is higher, the liquid absorbs barrel character more quickly. This is a cask strength bottling, meaning it's at its natural 55.7% alcohol by volume without dilution. No chill filtration, no added color. 12,000 bottles per batch. Nose: Citrus and nuts. Creamy. I haven't tasted many Arran spirits yet, but this one reminds me of the aroma profile of the 10-year. High alcohol presence, obviously, given its young age and proof. Dried fruits. It slightly reminds me of the nose of Glenfarclas 17, but with more pronounced citrus. Palate: It stings. Dominant citrus. Then vanilla and nuts. Okay, the finish is good: the burn has subsided. Aromatic intensity. You have to like cask strength spirits; otherwise, this probably won't be the one to make you appreciate cask strength. Nice oily texture! It's harsh, even after several sips. I think I'll add water. It's better. Most of the Arran spirits I've tasted had that strong ethanol presence. Probably their spirit doesn't handle high proofs as well. Finish: Lingering oak and vanilla... the citrus. Medium length. Overall: For the price here, around $95 CAD at the SAQ, I find it a bit expensive. At $70-80, I wouldn't say anything, but at this price, there are too many other bottles that come first. The texture is very nice, and the aromas are well-present. I don't like adding water to my scotch, but I think this is the kind of spirit that requires it to reveal its complexity. In short, I appreciate my glass; it's well-balanced, and it's a good quality product, but I would only buy it if I could find it cheaper, principally because it remains a young spirit, and for this price, I could have, for example, a Redbreast CS, a Lot 40 CS 11-year, a Laphroaig Cairdeas, etc. 72%

It has earned accolades, and deservedly so. An absolutely wonderful, invigorating, tropical cask strength spirit from a distillery I greatly admire, here is my assessment of Arran The Bothy Batch No. 1: This bottle aims to evoke the era when spirits were aged in smaller barrels, during the 18th and 19th centuries, due to practicalities, while offering magnificent vanilla and spice notes. Bottled at 55.7% alcohol by volume, with an amber hue. Upon smelling it, you're transported to the Dominican Republic. It's as tropical as can be. Tangerine, oranges, green apple, a prominent pineapple scent, fruit salad, grapes, champagne cola, malt, bananas, white wine. Following the second taste, chocolate-covered bananas and red fruits emerge. Delightful. On the palate, it displays considerable character, mirroring the nose: pears, bananas, oranges, more bananas, the essence of pineapple and... bananas. A second taste revealed elegant vanilla, honey, and marshmallows. The finish is very pleasing, though less tropical. Minerals, cinnamon, red fruits, cherries, and ginger. Altogether, this feels like an incredible fruit punch, a really enjoyable one. Exceptionally well-rounded, with no hint of alcohol even at 55.7% alcohol by volume. A superb pour, scoring 96 out of 100. Cheers!

The initial aroma is sweet and fruity, with strawberries and vanilla as the main components. There's also some citrus and almonds. The relatively young age is noticeable in the taste, with a burn. Dried fruits and lemon peel are on the palate, followed by a dominant caramel flavor. The white oak is quite prominent, along with spices like cinnamon, peppercorn, and a hint of licorice. Overall, it's full and sweet. The finish is long and dominated by chocolate.

Nose: musty tangerines, roses/honeysuckle, perfumed notes, and a clay-like minerality. Taste: immediately presents an alcoholic burn (which I find common for Arran). However, it does possess that wonderful Arran cask character. It quickly develops into subdued citrus, oak, and that earthy minerality. Finish: quite short with no new developments.

This is like drinking apple cider and then licking the barrel. Very fruit-forward with many sweet malty notes and an intense oak spice. It improves with water and air. Drinkable, but I didn't find myself returning to it often. I understand that with a quarter cask, the wood is a defining characteristic rather than a flaw, but it's not for me.

Nose presents as apricots and vanilla wafers. Initially sharp, followed by a developing soft, vanilla creaminess. Flavors of brown pears, red apples, and barley sugar are present. The heat is noticeable. A lingering, tannic oak sensation on the palate.
