Arran Small Batch Peated Sherry Cask The Nectar Exclusive for Belgium & Luxembourg

My interest was piqued by a shared Instagram post from Arran distillery featuring a whisky enthusiast from Belgium enjoying a dram of this. Upon seeing it, I knew I had to acquire this bottle. A quick chat with the individual revealed they own a substantial whisky shop and serve as an Arran ambassador. Since they lacked an online store, we arranged a purchase by mail, and the special delivery from Belgium arrived just days later. Arran ranks among my top three distilleries, and I'd previously enjoyed their sole retail peated expression, Machrie Moor, which was exclusively bourbon cask matured. However, Arran excels at sherry finishing, making this bottle an easy decision for me. Nose: The peat is prominent, yet alongside it lies an incredibly soft fruit medley with abundant vanilla and buttery marzipan. There's also a curious maritime note, unusual for Arran bottlings. The high proof is entirely masked (using a Norlan glass). In the background, a bright citrus sensation of lemon/orange emerges, followed by dark raspberries. Despite a sweet, fudgy character, the peat and wood blend impart a robust, organic "maturity" that gracefully compensates for its NAS status. Palate: Delightful peat intertwined with fruitcake, glazed with honey and roasted chili flakes, plus some waxy notes. The alcohol is noticeable initially but not intense, later transforming into pure butter in the mouth, with woody peat coating the back palate. Subsequent sips reveal the higher ABV becomes more assertive but remains well within an enjoyable range. Finish: Reminiscent of a honey-glazed roast with herbs, pan-seared the previous day and placed in a smoker. It's as if the smoky peat doesn't reside within the spirit but rather envelops it harmoniously. The whisky begins sweet, then heats up like caramelized smoked chili, becoming almost salty and woody, before concluding with a citric sweetness again, hints of mild herbs and spices, dark wood aromas, and cool peat smoke. Adding water proves detrimental. It surprisingly intensified the heat and diminished the sweetness, making the undiluted state the most enjoyable. In conclusion, this is a superb whisky. It genuinely brings to mind Kilchoman's Loch Gorm but offers a more fruit-forward, sweet nose, very typical of Arran, with less peat. While it doesn't reach Islay peat levels, the complexity and intense flavor fusion, expertly integrated within the surrounding peat aromas, are exceptionally well-executed. The pleasure and experience rival my favorite Islay whisky, Loch Gorm. Another bottle I wish I could share. I'm genuinely impressed by Arran's skill in crafting peated whisky.
