Ardbeg 1976 Connoisseurs Choice (Gordon & MacPhail)

I opened a cherished miniature on New Year's Eve. It was a Gordon & Macphail bottling of Ardbeg, from 1976 and aged 23 years. This bottle, from 1999, features one of the renowned "map labels" in Gordon & Macphail's Connoisseurs Choice series. It has a 40% ABV and a golden hue. Initially, the aroma offered a pleasant brownie scent, followed by aged orange peel and moss. It had a swampy quality, with notes of a wet ashtray, ancestral medicinal herbs, and salted water/iodine, making it quite intriguing and enjoyable. After a few sips, the ashy characteristic intensified significantly. The palate presented orange caramel and abundant salt, with a pleasing red chili spice. It began quite sweet. The third sip revealed marshmallows, cotton candy, and substantial sugar, offering a profile quite unlike typical Ardbeg expressions. The finish was dominated by ash and salt, with a definitively spectacular red chili presence. The peatiness was herbal. The third sip induced a sugar rush I'd never experienced with an Ardbeg before, featuring earthy, sweet, hay, moss, salt, and pepper notes. Overall, this was quite an experience. For a 40% ABV spirit, it demonstrated remarkable complexity and flavor depth. I felt it had many layers of taste and aroma, though the nose was undoubtedly the highlight. I rate this magnificent dram 93 out of 100.
