Aberfeldy 18 Year

Completely underwhelming. I anticipated more given that Aberfeldy 12 was quite good, but then again, I haven't had much luck with 18-year-old whiskies. Bottled at 40%, burnished color. On the nose, processed bananas, peaches, some salt, and nothing else. Fruit scents dominate this one. On the palate: smooth, pleasant spiciness, caramel, ginger, and ashes. But overall it's not very well-balanced and somewhat dull. The finish is short and spicy; medium body. 73% out of 100. I would not suggest this one.

You'll detect notes of wood chips, coffee beans, a medicinal aroma, a bit of smoke, nuts and nut-shells, and caramel. It's certainly distinct from other whiskies and possesses a uniqueness. While it is undoubtedly a pleasant whisky, it's not to my taste. In my view, it focuses on a single characteristic, and while that's not inherently bad, this whisky didn't deliver it in a way that would make me want to drink or repurchase it. It's not forgettable, just not very enjoyable.

Like a more refined version of another whisky, with better balance but less enjoyment from the fact that it cost more. This isn't a bad or flawed spirit, it's just not exciting. It has floral and herbal scents, like cut grass and a hint of citrus, followed by a body that feels oily but disappointingly light. The finish is balanced and pleasant, but it disappears from your palate and memory quickly.

A satisfying drink, especially considering its price. For an 18-year-old spirit, the $100 cost is exceptional. Unfortunately, it's only found at retail locations. Regarding the taste? Imagine pancakes. Think large, fluffy buttermilk pancakes with a pat of butter and drenched in syrup. Delicious. Don't miss the opportunity to buy it if you see it at a duty-free shop.

I acquired this in Singapore for SG130, which I felt was a good price. However, it's not a significant improvement over the 12, which was also quite good for its cost. Sweetness from honey and a rather mellow finish with some cane notes.

A nice way to relax on a Friday. It has a pleasant honey-like thickness. It's not complicated, and on its own, it's just okay, but it's a good deal for a 18-year-old. It costs about $70 here in NZ. I'm giving it a higher score for the value.
