A Tropical Breakfast 39.150 (SMWS)

Nose: Lemon, orange, and mandarin scents, not vibrant or sharp, but reminiscent of homemade lemonade from days past. Mango, pineapple, and other tropical fruits appear, followed by a more floral character with honeysuckle, frangipani, and vanilla blossom aromas. Subtle oak, some musky sandalwood, and coconut are present in the background. Palate: A smooth, delightfully sweet, and rich entry with crème brûlée and succulent sweet citrus flavors combined. As it develops, a comforting warmth of mild sweet ginger and tropical fruits in their own juice emerges, bordered by notes of oatmeal cookies and a faint hint of salt. The mouthfeel remains glistening and satiny throughout. While not exceptionally intricate, the flavors present are quite excellent. Finish: Extended. Honey and fruit juice fade into a creamy oak aftertaste. I acquire a number of single malt Scotch Whisky Society (SMWS) bottlings annually. While I typically have one open, I've never shared a review here. I'm unsure of the reason, perhaps it's a niche within a niche, and many bottles are specific to certain regions, making them seem less relevant. However, in this instance, I'm reviewing what remains of this bottle as I finish it, solely to have a representative SMWS review posted, and because I particularly enjoyed this 9-year-old expression from Linkwood. The SMWS tasting panel's name for this bottle is entirely accurate. It evokes a complete tropical breakfast (on a sun-drenched balcony overlooking an untouched beach, with a companion who has just applied sunscreen), and it's truly delightful. My tasting notes are for the spirit served neat. However, aside from a brief neat tasting for the experience, I never consume these pristine single-cask whiskies without dilution. In my view, they don't achieve their peak potential without a few drops or a generous splash of water. Through experimentation, I discovered that reducing the proof from 59.9% to just under 50% was ideal for my preferences. This adjustment didn't diminish the inherent character but rather enhanced it, adding extra creaminess to the texture while eliminating the expected sharp bite from the high proof. A highly pleasing whisky, now sadly depleted. But no concern – the next SMWS bottle I open will be equally good, or perhaps superior (and occasionally, not quite as good, but that's life). I've never rated an SMWS bottle below 83/100, which translates to 3.5 stars on the 5-star scale I use. "Very Good": 87/100 (4.25 stars)

Ah, this application is frustrating. The latest issue involves random and repeated crashes because it doesn't handle certain photos well when creating a new entry... eventually got it done... much like the 'Aromatherapy' package's journey to Virginia, with some anxious moments waiting at customs, but it arrived! This one is from a friend. Initially, I thought... hmm... then hmmmmm... then hmmmmmm... which translates to 'is this good?'...'I believe it might be'... and yes, it certainly is. It requires a significant amount of water and some time, but once those are addressed, it truly excels. Delightful biscuity vanilla. Many thanks to my friend!
