10th Street California Coast

This was an impulse buy. I saw it for the first time yesterday and purchased it today.... The aroma was promising. I immediately detected "maple-cured bacon." I had hoped the palate would deliver similarly, but instead, I encountered a strange chemical taste, which I assumed was peat (I'm not fond of peated whiskey!). However, as it rested (with an ice cube), it began to reveal more of itself, elevating it from, "Meh!" to, "Hmmm!". I got a pleasant burst of sweet roasted corn. I realized that was what I had initially mistaken for peat. The finish... not much to report. Short, I'd say, with little notable character. This is a young whiskey. The label states, "Aged at least 2 Years." I thought it was going to be my first-ever drain pour. But the later discovery of corn saved it. 2.25 stars because it wasn't my preference, but not completely undrinkable either. Added 7/14/23: The "cured maple bacon" reappeared on the palate during tonight's tasting. However, this spirit is still too much like Scotch for my liking. It's generally too musty and funky. It might sound odd, but I almost detected something like sweaty socks just now. I believe it's too peaty. I despise peat. I'm lowering my initial rating of 2.25 to a 2. I might even pour it down the drain tomorrow morning.

Really great stuff! By itself, it's subtle initially but finishes with an earthy quality. Adding water enhances the more delicate, fruity notes.
