Laphroaig 10 Year

The aroma is consistently medicinal, featuring adhesive bandages and iodine, joined by peat smoke, with undertones of worn leather, cinnamon, green apples, and a whisper of salty sea air. The palate presents peat smoke, iodine, asphalt, aged rubber, bitter black tea, and sea salt. It's intensely savory and delicious, with subtle hints of vanilla and burnt caramel emerging as you continue sipping. The medium finish echoes the smoke from the palate, now evoking cigar smoke. It swiftly shifts to soot and wet ashes, concluding with a hint of citrus zest. The lingering taste on the tongue is that of bitter black tea. Adding a few drops of water enhances the vanilla on the palate and introduces delicate herbal notes. Vanilla is also noticeable in the finish, which now ends with a salty impression that has replaced the black tea. Overall, the aroma is the highlight, the palate is very enjoyable, but the finish is less impressive by comparison. This dram is consistently a delight, offering great value for money.

The aroma opens with mossy peat and a hint of lemon, carried on a salty sea breeze. There's a trace of seaweed in there, and at times even something resembling wet charred wood. Underneath it all, just at the very back, a tiny trace of caramel appears. On certain occasions, a faint medicinal iodine drifts in, but it's not always noticeable—sometimes it's prominent, other times it remains hidden. The palate hits immediately with salt, almost like a wave catching you off guard, before quickly moving into sharp lemon. Depending on the occasion, a touch of smoke emerges here—not always heavy or tarry, sometimes just a gentle ashiness. The iodine can appear mid-glass, mingling with the citrus and salt, but on other pours it stays in the background. Somewhere in the mix, a little toffee sweetness lingers, never the main focus but enough to soften the edges. The finish can be surprisingly short for such a bold whisky—often a flash of lemon and pepper before it's gone, though the mouthfeel is thicker and oilier than you'd expect for 40%. Some occasions it fades into dry ash, others it brightens right at the end, leaving a cleaner, fresher impression than you started with. Laphroaig 10 is never exactly the same from one tasting to the next. One day it’s bright, zesty, and coastal; the next it’s mossy, ashy, and brooding, with iodine swirling through the background. That's part of its allure—it’s not just a one-dimensional smoke bomb, it’s a dram that shifts with your palate, your preferences, and even the weather outside.

The top offering for a reason, the 10 year is a real crowd-pleaser. It possesses the smoothness and sweet richness one might expect from a somewhat older spirit. Beyond the obvious misrepresentation, Laphroaig could easily claim this was a 15 year and nobody would question it. With a subtle maritime flavor, you can discern that this spirit spent its decade very close to the ocean surrounding Islay.

Nose: a beautiful salty sea air aroma, classic strong Laphroaig peat, even without a proper nosing glass, Laphroaig 10 still manages to present an intriguing scent! Palate: rowdy. Imagine a roaring beach bonfire with rain misting what you'd expect to be seawater. Seaweed, rubber, vanilla. Finish: phenolic, salty, with nicely present oak tannins.

This has been my preferred whiskey whenever I desire an easy-drinking, smoky, and flavorful dram without spending a lot. I find it somewhat straightforward, lacking much complexity. The smoke and vanilla are clearly noticeable. I believe this would be very suitable for beginners. It certainly was for me as a novice.
