XOP Xtra Old Particular, 30yo Auchentoshan

One of the great things about Scotland is finding extremely rare whiskies in a regular bar at a very reasonable price. In a place called "Tiger Lily," a club, I found my first Xtra Old Particular (XOP), which I believe is a single cask strength brand of independent bottlings by Douglas Laing. This one was a 30-year-old Auchentoshan, bottled at 53.9% ABV, distilled in December 1984 and bottled in February 2015. On the nose, a powerful yet wonderful lime note with salty characteristics. It gives an overall Tequila impression; grapefruit; chocolate is present but very faint. Tiramisu dessert. On the palate, it's a bit too harsh for a 30-year-old. Vanilla, chocolate, and hazelnut. A second sip revealed a beautiful, refined, super fancy chocolate note, which I expected from a 30-year-old lowland malt. Aftertaste changes the pace in a good way. Hay, mineral, and rocky. A ginger explosion and very nutty/almondy. Overall, this was a very good whisky. Perhaps too good for a "discotheque." It was so clean and potent that I could actually review it even amidst loud music. I believe it lacks a little complexity, but it has a nice, balanced flavor and aroma profile. Solid whisky, my score for it is 88 out of 100.
