Woodford Reserve Kentucky Derby 150

This was purchased somewhat spontaneously as we were hosting the Kentucky Derby. Mint juleps were, naturally, the drink of the day. So, I picked up a bottle of the official whiskey sponsor of the derby, this year's version of Woodford's 2024 derby bottling. Nose: Warm apple caramel crumb cake, reminiscent of a cake fresh from the oven on a Sunday morning. Suede leather and vanilla oak add a soft, earthy sweetness. After a few minutes in the glass, notes of cream soda emerge, with a dusting of baking spices enhancing the overall aroma. Palate: The first few sips evoke cinnamon apple strudel. The body is thin, with a thin alcohol presence (thinner than water). Charred oak, white pepper, caramel, brown sugar, and apricots contribute to the thin body, offering some flavor to the palate. Finish: The finish is thin and medium-short. Notes of oaken char, leather, and white pepper linger. Overall: As a sipper, this is an ideal bourbon for a beginner. It has good aromas and typical sweetened bourbon flavors that aren't overpowering. As a mixer, it has enough strength to hold up against dilution, carrying its flavors through. Elijah Craig or Four Roses Small Batch offer more robust flavors with greater oak, cinnamon, and caramel, making them a preferred choice over the Woodford Reserve. For Mint Juleps, it creates an enjoyable cocktail for the general public that no one would refuse (unless they dislike the mint itself). And for the record, Mystik Dan won by a nose. Tasted without a typical example of the brand, it met expectations, and at this price for a 1L bottle, it's quite good. I drank it neat, as usual.

Rich, chewy, rounded, and smooth, with complex notes of citrus, cinnamon, and cocoa. Toffee, caramel, chocolate, and spice are abundant.

Nose: chocolate brown sugar. Taste: brown sugar, chocolate, pepper. Oak.

Standard offering from this brand, but I'm giving it a slight boost for the Derby release.

Pleasant flavor as always, easy to drink.
