The aroma presented many scents: baked cookie, honey, grass, spice/rye, and intense proof heat, appearing promising. However, upon tasting, I felt conflicted. Instead of harmonizing, the diverse notes seemed to compete for dominance, ultimately neutralizing each other by the finish. I perceived a rye character, yet best as I could gather, the mash bill consisted of corn, wheat, and malted barley. It was exceptionally smooth with minimal burn, despite its 104.2 proof. The finish suggested the presence of flavor enhancers, but I found no definitive proof either way. Overall, this specific barrel selection from Wilderness Trail’s Family Reserve Single Barrel series did not justify its cost.
