Wight's Maryland Straight Rye Whiskey

This five-year-old rye originates from the Frank L. Wight Distilling Co., established in Lorely, Maryland, post-Prohibition and operated by Frank and his grandfather John until its sale in 1943 due to shifting consumer preferences away from rye. Hiram Walker acquired the distillery and ceased operations in 1950, relocating production to their Illinois facility. The rye exhibits a very deep, dark ruby color, nearly opaque, leaving behind heavy oils that create numerous legs down the glass. The aroma is both delicate and buttery initially, complemented by an excellent blend of rye spice and oak, with floral notes emerging over time. It evokes the sensation of walking into a bakery, making one eager to taste it. The palate is coated with rye and oak, accompanied by a buttery bread note that contributes to a rich mouthfeel. Moving it around reveals hints of cocoa, presenting a straightforward yet delightful taste experience. The finish is medium in length, with rye spice leaving a tingle and oak lingering on the palate. The rich buttery bread note persists as it fades quickly. This is a whiskey that invites repeated tasting, and it's unfortunate this style is lost to time. A longer finish and more intense flavors would make this rye truly exceptional.
